AFS INTERNATIONAL The contact person for Lake Oswego and Lakeridge High Schools is Lori James (503-638-3207). Established to promote world understanding by bringing foreign students to Lake Oswego high schools for a year and by sending American students abroad.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN of Lake Oswego/West Linn meets monthly at Lake Oswego Heritage House. Its primary purpose is to make good men better. Waluga Lodge recently celebrated its 80th year in Lake Oswego. BATTERED WOMEN’S SUPPORT GROUP provides confidential services and information on referrals for male and female survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Portland Women’s Crisis Line assists in providing shelters for survivors. The crisis line is a confidential resource line open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Information referral (503-235-5333). DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Contact: Regent Terri Schieber (503-699-7656). Local chapter organized April 12, 1958; national organization founded in 1890: and incorporated by act of the U.S. Congress in 1896. Purpose is to perpetuate memory and spirit of men and women who achieved American independence, to promote enlightened public opinion and foster patriotic citizenship. Group offers scholarships to high school students. Tualatin chapter meets 11 a.m. first Monday of month, October through May. Meetings held in members’ homes or significantly historical locations. Local chapter has about 28 members. Open to any woman over 18 descended from man or woman loyal to cause of American independence, serving as sailor, soldier or civil officer in one of the colonies or states.

FAN-FOREST HILLS NEIGHBORS ASSOCIATION meets mostly on the first Wednesday of each month at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center. For meeting times or information, contact chairwoman Maria Meneghin at 503-699-9857 or check out the group’s Web site at www.fanforesthills.com.

FRIENDS OF THE CHRISTIE SCHOOL The Christie School, Marylhurst (1-888-982-2237) www.christiecare.org. Chief Executive Officer Lynne Saxton. The Christie School is a psychiatric residential treatment center serving many of Oregon’s most severely emotionally disturbed children. Membership in The Friends is open to any community member who wishes to assist with Christie School’s fundraising efforts, special projects and activities for children.

FRIENDS OF THE LAKE OSWEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY Established in 1953 for people interested in books and libraries, to acquaint the public with the needs and services of the library, and to provide aid and materials beyond the library budget. The group sponsors the Booktique bookstore, 3975 Mercantile Drive, lower level (503-699-9109). Call for information on meeting times and locations. Membership fees: Individual, $5; family, $7.50; patron, $25; sponsor, $100.

FRIENDS OF MADDAX WOODS Meet the fourth Thursday of the month with the location usually at Market of Choice in West Linn. Purpose is to aid and assist the city of West Linn in the historic preservation of the Maddax house, the grounds, the gardens and the surrounding wilderness. Maddax Woods is located on River Street and is a city park donated to West Linn by Dorothy Maddax in 1999. In November, the group hosts annual the Lighting of the Woods, which is free to the public with a sale of the conifers and related wildlife items. New members welcome. FRIENDS OF THE McLEAN HOUSE - 5350 River Street, West Linn. More than 25 years ago a small group of concerned citizens came together and formed the Friends of McLean House, a nonprofit organization, to save the McLean House for our community. Initial projects varied from ivy pulls, painting, and stripping wallpaper. Volunteers are important to us. The West Linn Lions Club has been a continuous contributor of labor and financial support for us for many years. Local high school students have done community service hours here. FRIENDS OF TRYON CREEK STATE PARK — Executive director David Cohen (503-636-4398). www.tryonfriends.org. Nonprofit citizens’ organization dedicated to the preservation of the natural environment in Tryon Creek State Park, 11321 S.W. Terwilliger Blvd, Portland. The Friends publish a newsletter about park activities, sponsor programs and classes and provide volunteer and educational services to the park. KRUSE WAY-LAKE OSWEGO ROTARY — President Dan Polzin. Established 1987. Memberships: 50 business or professional people. All vocations welcome. Major project: Fund-raising for children with cancer through annual Christmas Party and other events. Also host community projects, high school scholarships, the Youth Employment Institute, host one international exchange student per year and host projects with elderly residents. LAKE AREA ARTISTS — Group formed in January 1965 to promote art appreciation and to help further individual artists’ goal. Eight to 10 meetings held yearly on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Realty Trust building on “A” Avenue in Lake Oswego. To be accepted, an artist submits five pieces of artwork, which are reviewed by a jury of member artists. When accepted, $25 annual dues required. Annual art show and sale for members, last weekend in April. Also, members show works around town regularly. New members must be recommended by current members. LAKE GROVE GARDEN CLUB President Darby Walker (503-675-0173). Meets the third Thursday each month at 11 a.m. at the Heritage House. No meetings in Dec., June, July or August. Founded in 1924. Provides community beautification projects at the elementary schools, public library, Pioneer Cemetery and throughout the city. Presents a yearly scholarship to a horticulture student. Hosts annual plant sale. This is the 84th year for the plant sale. Lake Grove Garden Club is the oldest federated garden club in Oregon.

Established Nov. 29, 1966, to support the community through projects in and around Lake Oswego and Lake Grove. Active in the Lions International program “Campaign Sight First,” helping to alleviate blindness throughout the world. Also active in Lions Youth Outreach. Locally, the club is providing glasses and hearing aids to people in the community who need but cannot afford them. One of its fund-raisers is an annual Fourth of July chicken barbecue. The club also sponsors the Laker Leo Club ages 12 to high school graduation. The goal is to provide young people with leadership skills and service opportunities. The group’s 25 members meet on the first and third Tuesdays at noon at Szechuan Kitchen in Lake Grove.

LAKE OSWEGO NEIGHBORHOOD ACTION COALITION — For information contact Carolyn Krebs (503-635-5069). Formed in 1992, the group meets to provide a process for citizens to participate in government as a means of preserving and enhancing the quality of life in the community by influencing government action from a neighborhood or individual perspective. Lake management group handles such matters as water quality, financial issues, restoration, safety, personnel, relations with city and state governments, shareholder problems and building situations affecting the waterfront.

LAKE OSWEGO FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS — Co-chairs: Tris Denton and Lois Suwol. Contact: (503-636-1060). Largest visual arts open show in the Northwest. Featuring visual arts, fine arts, crafts, performing artists, food vendors. Housed in Lakewood Center for the Arts and George Rogers Park, last weekend in June. Volunteers welcome. LAKE OSWEGO HUNT CLUB 2725 Iron Mountain Blvd. (503-636-0674). General Manager Gail Stuart-Bowles. Member owned and operated, boarding and training facility for horses. Open since September 1937; a national historic site. Riding lessons; open to public.

LAKE OSWEGO JUNIOR WOMEN’S CLUB meets third Thursday of each month. The Lake Oswego Junior Women's Club was started by a small, social group of local women with time and desire to help others. Today, the mission statement of LOJWC is "To bring closer the women of Lake Oswego and to promote through their common interests the civic, cultural, educational, and social welfare of the community." Over the years, the club’s focus has shifted to raising money to donate to Portland-area nonprofit organizations that aid needy women and children. The LOJWC are still a social organization but much more focused on fundraising. The club establishes annual scholarships for graduating seniors. It also supports civic organizations with contributions to the Heritage House, Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce and the annual fireworks display. Annual fundraisers include the Holiday Home Tour in December and the Lake Run each spring. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF CLACKAMAS COUNTY - P.O. Box 411, Lake Oswego, OR, 97034. Local league established in 1955; national league established in 1920. The purposes of the League of Women Voters of Clackamas County are to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation in government and to act on selected governmental issues. Their mission is: to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government; to increase understanding of major public policy issues; to influence public policy through education and advocacy. The local league has 175 members, who must be at least 18. Annual memberhip dues are $65 for an individual. Two people sharing an address may join at a savings over the cost of two individual memberships. Annual Household Membership dues are $97.50. Membership for full-time students is $30. LEGACY MERIDIAN PARK HOSPITAL AUXILIARY Contact Genie Aylor (503-692-2186). Formed in 1974 to support the delivery of community health care through fundraising, education and patient services. Members meet quarterly and are responsible for operation of the hospital gift shop, which is the main fundraiser. Special sales are held at the hospital. Scholarships are given yearly to high school students and continuing education students planning to pursue health careers.

The Oswego Heritage Council promotes and increases public awareness to preserve the community's legacy of historically significant buildings, sites. culture, natural charm, and recorded materials and cooperates with other organizations working toward similar goals. The council has a membership of approximately 650 people.

ROTARY CLUB OF LAKE OSWEGO meets noon Mondays, downstairs at the Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St., Lake Oswego. President, Chuck O’Leary. Membership information: (503-497-5247). Each year Lake Oswego Rotary holds the annual Lobster Feed and Auction. The event is considered one of the top ten fundraising Rotary events in all of North America. Established in 1958 as a community service club, the organization supports local and international efforts including: providing Holiday Food Baskets, serving meals at the Adult Community Center, support of Lake Oswego’s many community gardens and natural areas and numerous internation projects including strong support of Africa Bridge.

NEWCOMERS CLUB OF LAKE OSWEGO AND WEST LINN offers numerous monthly social events. Founded in the 1950’s, the purpose is to help members make new friends and become active in the community. WEST LINN GARDEN CLUB Meet the first Monday of the month (except July and August) at 7 p.m. at West Linn Lutheran Church, 20390 Willamette Drive (HWY 43) in West Linn. One of the oldest clubs in West Linn first organized in 1916. Promote and provide gardening and natural resource protection education for our members. Host an annual plant sale, provide an annual educational program for the community in cooperation with the library and provide gardening books to the library. Annual picnic is in August. New members welcome.

WEST LINN LIONS CLUB - Established in 1953, the West Linn Lions raises funds through their Lion Burger sales, Bowl-a-thon, Kraut & Sausage Feed and other fundraising activities to provide no cost programs for the West Linn Community, such as: Coats for Kids, Safe Boating for Kids, Scholarships to WLHS Seniors, etc. The West Linn Lions also provide support for WLHS club projects, Happy Trails Riding Academy (horse riding for handicapped children), building projects for the West Linn Parks department and much more.
